An Oldies But Goodies Day... Museums...

I think we all know Google is "BIG" - huge, etc. But for myself, I haven't really appreciated just "How big is BIG?" Well, modern life in much of the world would change dramatically overnight if they suddenly vanished. It has been brought home to me somewhat on this trip to Istanbul. Istanbul has a fantastic public transport system - trams, busses, subway, funiculars - with everything running mostly on time despite the nightmarish traffic. There are probably a million taxis here, but that's not generally the way to travel, in my humble opinion. Public transport is faster and easier - though there is usually some walking involved. Which brings us back to Google. I have found I can go anywhere in the city with Google showing the way. Often a given destination will generate multiple options. Walk to a given point, catch a tram or any of multiple listed busses (sometimes only 1) and the time to catch the conveyance is listed and expected travel time. Make multiple connections if necessary with Google showing the way. Watch your trip progress in real time and see upcoming stops on Maps so you get off at the right place. How convenient has this made life for the 23 million or so people in Istanbul and the millions of annual visitors? Beyond measurement. And this is one tiny, specific area that they manage to handle worldwide in real time! Think about that and what it involves.

Turkish & Islamic Arts Museum

The current museum building has its basis in a historic building dating to Roman times.

Turkish and Islamic Art Museum is the first museum in our country to include Turkish - Islamic art works together. It opened its doors for the first time in 1914.

The Great Palace Mosaics Museum
The biggest palace of the Eastern Roman Empire once stood where this museum is now. After declaring the city of Constantinople (Istanbul) as the new capital of the Roman Empire, Emperor Constantine ordered a palace for the kings of Rome. It was a huge palace and according to the records highly luxurious as well. Out of a huge palace construction, today one of the places that a traveler may enjoy the luxury of a Roman Palace is the Mosaic Museum. The excavated area off to the side of the Blue Mosque in 1950s was a porch section of the palace - a rectangular area surrounded with the columns, the mosaics of this area gives a lot of ideas about the daily lives of the Romans. The floors of this section is covered with mosaics - mostly in situ. Other sections of mosaics are also preserved and displayed in the museum
